December 9 & 10

NCCA, a Metlife Foundation and the UM Osher Lifelong Institute present the professional forum “Creativity Matters: Miami Arts and Aging Symposium on Lifelong Learning.” The symposium is oriented for artist, educators and aging service providers to discuss diverse instructional methods to engage older adults in creative work. The event includes a visual art exhibition and lunch for both days. Sessions are available in both English and Spanish. For more information or registration, please call 305-284-6554.

December 12

American Girl Fridays, a historical book club sponsored by the Girl Scouts of America Troop 373, introduces you to a new American Girl and her book. The club meets at Barnes & Noble located at 152 Miracle Mile every second Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m. Adults and children are invited to experience this unique historical perspective of different periods in history through the eyes of an American girl. December 12 – 14

The Coral Gables Museum invites you to a special presentation featuring the work of all participants in the first Gingerbread House Contest. Admire the talent and creativity of the contestants inspired by a holiday spirit. A showcase featuring holiday photos from all generations and places will also be presented. The event is free and open to the public. The display will take place at the sales center for the Old Spanish Village project located at 2901 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. December 12 – 14

The University of Miami School of Communication presents the first in Blake Edward’s classic series of Pink Panther films. The Pink Panther will be playing at the Bill Cosford Cinema in the Memorial Building on the Coral Gables campus on Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. General admission to the screening is $8, seniors, UM employees and alumni pay $6. Now playing at the Bill Cosford Cinema is Wayne Wang’s A Thousand Years of Good Prayers. The film centers around a Chinese father who travels to the states to help his daughter cope with her divorce. But she is not interested in his help. The film will be playing at the Bill Cosford Cinema in the Memorial Building on the Coral Gables campus on Friday at 9 p.m., Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. General admission to the screening is $8, seniors, UM employees and alumni pay $6. December 13

Holiday activities are not complete without a visit to the Merrick House. From 2-5 p.m., the Merrick House Governing Board cordially invites all residents to the Holiday Open House, a free celebration that will get visitors in the mood for the holidays with plenty of food, music, self guided tours, and a special visit by jolly old Santa Claus. The Merrick House is the family home of City founder George Merrick, located at 907 Coral Way. For more information, contact the Historical Resources Department at 305-460-5093.

December 13 – 14

This is your chance to pick up some beautiful handicrafts from around the world. A Fair Trade Marketplace Bazaar is taking place at the Coral Gables Congregational Church located at 3010 DeSoto Boulevard. On Saturday the marketplace will open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, call 305-448-7421, extension 26.

December 17

Take advantage of new senior programming to get our golden residents connected with the world through the internet. A one-day All Inclusive Workshop for Online Shopping will teach seniors how to shop from the comfort of their home. In order to take this class seniors must have internet computer knowledge. The four-hour session starts at 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. breaks for lunch and returns at 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. The computer class will be held at the Coral Gables Adult Activity Center, 624 Anastasia Avenue. The fee for the class is $60. You must register for the class at least four days in advance by calling 305-460-5609.

December 17 – 23

The most talented young tennis players come from all over the world to play at the Junior Orange Bowl International Tennis Championship. This competition welcomes only the very best 12 & under and 14 & under tennis players, meeting face to face in very competitive matches. Many tennis starts participated in this prestigious tournament during their rise to fame including Andre Agassi, Ana Kournikova, and Monica Seles, to name a few. The tournament will be taking place in different locations in Coral Gables and Miami, including the UM Schiff Tennis Center, and at the William Kerdyk Biltmore Tennis Center. December 19

Seniors are encouraged to attend and experience the spectacular holiday The Nutcracker by famed producer George Balanchine. A bus will depart from the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center, 405 University Drive, at 6:30 p.m. and bound for the Arsht Center. The cost of the event is $65 which includes transportation and a ticket for a great seat. Today is the last day to register for the trip. To register or for more information, call 305-460-5609.

December 22

Join us for the Lighting of Coral Gables Largest Menorah, on Tuesday, December 22 at 5:30 p.m. at Fred B. Harnett/Ponce Circle Park, 2800 Ponce de Leon Boulevard. This is an annual event for the entire community featuring a night of fun, face painting, bounce house, food and music, sponsored by Aronfeld Trial Lawyers with special appearance by Bob Mayer of NBC6. The event is open to the public. Please bring an unwrapped toy that will be donated to parents fighting overseas for our country. For more information, call 305-491-1499.

Through December 27

Enjoy a special holiday performance specifically orchestrated for young audiences. The Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre for Young Audiences presents A Christmas Carol, the Musical! This wonderful play is a family oriented musical adaptation of a classic that aims at changing Ebeneezer Scrooge and his “Bah-Humbug” ways. The play takes place Saturdays at 2 p.m. at the Actors' Playhouse located at Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile. A special holiday performance will be held on December 21 at 5 p.m. and December 24 at 7 p.m. General admission is $15. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden presents an outdoor exhibition of five massive sculptures from renowned artist Mark di Suvero, including the never before exhibited Olompali. The sculptures in the exhibition are on loan from the Mark di Suvero Collection. Di Suvero’s arresting pieces consistently draw critical acclaim, and confront audiences with their audacious colors and shapes and mesmerize crowds with their energy and intricate proportion. Fairchild’s unique landscape provides the perfect backdrop to truly reveal these massive structures. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables. Admission is free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under. Non-members pay $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children ages 6-17.
