Commission Holds Workshop On Financial Reporting

At the end of every fiscal year, the City has an independent accounting firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of all the financial statements including revenues, expenditures, internal controls, separation of duties, and assessed risks. In addition to this external review, the City’s own Office of Internal Audit is responsible for ensuring that an adequate internal control structure is in place for compliance with applicable laws and regulations. On an average, this Office conducts between 12 and 15 audits throughout the year and their finding and recommendations are reported to the Budget/Audit Advisory Board. At a January 21 workshop, the Commission discussed the possibility of adding another layer of checks and balances by expanding the scope of the external auditor’s work on significant financial issues that occur during the year and to report directly to the Commission. The Commission pledged to continue this discussion and to iron out the details for additional financial auditing.

What To Do When Driving Through A Traffic Circle

The City of Coral Gables recently opened the roundabout at Segovia Street and Coral Way in its continued campaign to provide traffic calming devices to reduce vehicular congestion. Now, it’s up to drivers to follow the rules of the road when driving through a traffic circle and avoid unnecessary accidents, but many still don’t know what to do. Coral Gables Television has prepared an educational video that is currently airing on Channel 77 reminding drivers what to do when driving through a traffic circle. There are some simple steps to follow like: a) Slow down as you approach the traffic circle, but you are not required to stop; b) Wait for a gap and merge with the moving traffic and c) Always yield to vehicles that are already in the circle.
