March 4 Oltremontano, under the director of baroque trombonist Wim Becu, has been internationally recognized as one of the leading authentic brass ensembles for the last 15 years. Hear them perform live during the Miami Bach Society Tropical Baroque Music Festival. German wind bands have a tradition going back four centuries and this prominent Belgian ensemble performs the music on cornets and sackbuts as it would have been played around 1700. March 4 – April 5 Attend the regional premiere of the greatest musical ever written. Experience the dramatic masterpiece, Les Misérables, at Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre. The musical depicts the epic saga of social injustice and the triumph of the human spirit. Les Misérables recounts the struggle of the French people during the late 1800s. Actors' Playhouse is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Tickets cost $40 for Wednesday, Thursday evening and Sunday matinee, and $48 for Friday and Saturday evening performances. The young musician began his musical studies at a young age with the teaching of Vittorio Bonotto. March 5 – 19 The City is welcoming seniors into the technological age with Beginner Computer Classes. This course is for real beginners. Learn how to turn on the computer, use a mouse, start-up menus, icons and much more. March 6 The Coral Gables Museum continues its Architecture and Design Lecture Series with a presentation by author and UM Architecture Professor Rocco Ceo on Building Close to Nature: the Early Architecture of Dade County's Park System. Ceo will discuss the design and construction of Miami-Dade County's early park architecture and how it evolved through forest fires, hurricanes and the post-boom period of the 1930s. March 6 Ex Umbris traces the courtly and popular music devoted to the topic of melancholy in this theatrical performance. March 6 – 8 The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana presents the 11th annual Carnaval on the Mile. This three-day Latin jazz event combines great food, a large array of jazz bands, art pieces from over 100 artists and an automobile exhibition all happening along the famed Miracle Mile. On Friday, the carnival is having a kick-off concert at Fred B. Hartnett/Ponce Circle Park, 2810 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, from 7 p.m. – 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday the fun moves to the entire stretch of Miracle Mile from LeJeune Road to Douglas Road from 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. This is a free event for the whole family. For more information, click here. March 6, 7, 13, & 14 Roald Dahl's timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir comes to life on stage. Miami Childrens Theater’s Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory will feature songs from the classic family film. Performances taking place at the Coral Gables Youth Center Theater, 405 University Drive, are scheduled on the above mentioned dates at 8 p.m. with additional shows on March 7 and 14 at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $14. March 7 The Tropical Baroque Music Festival presents the United States debut of the Thomas Gabriel Trio, hailed by audiences around the world for its unique jazz arrangements of Bach's compositions. March 7 The Momentum Dance Company transforms a literary classic into a children’s play. See Mark Twain’s Jumping Frog of Calaveras County at the Coral Gables Branch Library. This is just one of the events in the Momentum Dance Company’s 2009 Children’s Library Series. The play starts at 11 a.m. and is free and open to children. March 9 – April 17 The beautiful and historic Venetian Pool is preparing for its reopening scheduled for May. Lifeguards are a necessary component for the pool’s success. This year the City is looking for a few good men and women to join this important group in charge of making sure all guests are safe. Lifeguards must be certified to work at Venetian Pool. Several Lifeguard Certification and Re-Certification Classes are available throughout the month of March and April to accommodate your schedule. There are several prerequisites such as swimming 200 yards without stopping using Freestyle and Breast stroke, treading water for two minutes with hands above the water and retrieving a 10 pound brick from the bottom of the pool. You must be at least 16 years old to work at Venetian Pool. Certification Classes takes place at the Country Club of Coral Gables, 997 N. Greenway Drive. March 13 – 15 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is excited to announce the International Orchid Festival. The festival features over 10,000 orchids from around the world. The Orchid Society of Coral Gables will also provide advice and tips on growing orchids on the garden House lawn. Special lectures, walking tours, live music and great food will be incorporated into the event making it a fun outing for the whole family. The festival will open to the public Friday through Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is free to Fairchild members and children 5 and under. Admission for adults is $20, seniors pay $15 and children 6 – 17 years of age pay $10. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. For more information, click here. March 14 The Villagers are excited to announce the popular annual Garden Tour which helps raise funds for the restoration and preservation of historic sites in South Florida. This year six gardens, five of which are privately owned, will be open to the public. The gardens are located in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove. This year’s Garden Tour: A Mosaic of Gardens is being described as a rare opportunity to see six of the most magnificent garden masterpieces in South Florida. Each garden poses unique features of color, water, rare plant collections and elevations. This special event takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tickets cost $25 and must be purchased the day of the event at two of the garden locations: 200 Edgewater Drive in Coral Gables or The Kampong, 4013 Douglas Road in Coconut Grove. For more information, click here. March 14 The South Florida Emerald Society is happy to host its traditional St. Patrick’s Day Irish Festival in Coral Gables. The festival will take place at Fred B. Hartnett/Ponce Circle Park, 2810 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, from noon until sunset. Enjoy authentic Irish food, a variety of crafts and even fun and games for children. Enjoy a beautiful and diverse display of palms for sale when you visit the Montgomery Botanical Center, 12205 Old Cutler Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the center for the Palm Sale is free! March 15 Classic car enthusiasts are in for a treat. Miracle Mile from LeJeune Road to Salzedo Street will turn into exhibition row for more than 50 vintage vehicles. March 16 Listen to guest speakers discuss issues of importance for seniors during the Monthly Lunch & Lecture Series. A complimentary lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. followed by the presentation. On March 16, guest speaker Ruthmarie Goerke-Matthysse will talk about her book On Wings of Hope, From Berlin to Caracas. March 17 Wear your favorite green hue and head over to the John Martin’s Irish Pub and Restaurant for the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration. The huge block party will include live bands and several food stations. The fun starts at 5 p.m. until midnight on Salzedo Street between Miracle Mile and Giralda Avenue and encompassing a portion of Aragon Avenue.
