August 15 – September 13

GableStage Theater is pleased to announce the final play of its season: Speed the Plow, a hilarious, acid-etched satire that depicts Hollywood as a culture of corruption. Telling the story of two greedy Hollywood executives that are set to pitch a can't-lose deal to the studio boss, but a seductive secretary complicates everything. August 20

The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce Southeast invites you to the August installment of the Italian Cooking Show at Mia Cucina. Don’t miss this final battle of the chefs featuring Pelican Restaurant Chef Rosario Corrao and Sardinia Enoteca Ristorante Chef Davide Piana. This interactive experience takes place from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Mia Cucina, 105 Miracle Mile. After the show enjoy Italian food and wine tasting. August 20

Unfortunately, seniors have become the target of thieves and scam artists. The Coral Gables Police Department has teamed up with the Coral Gables @HOME program to provide senior residents with a safety awareness class called Safety Check. Participants will learn how to protect themselves from identity theft and other forms of theft. They will also learn how to use the 3-1-1 system to get help after a hurricane. Seniors will be able to tour the Police Department and enjoy light refreshments. The class takes place at the Coral Gables Police Department, 2801 Salzedo Street, from 1 – 4 p.m. Safety Check is a free class that is open to the public. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, call 305-443-4011.

August 27 – September 27

New Theatre kicks off its 2009-2010 season with the William Shakespeare classic, The Taming of the Shrew. The play centers on a violently tempered woman and her strong-willed husband. Both end up wreaking havoc on the conventions of courtship and marriage, a classic battle of the sexes. Performances are held Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. For more information or ticket prices, call 305-443-5909 or click here. August 28

The critically acclaimed chamber choir Seraphic Fire will continue its summer concert series with soloist Richard Dowling in A Celebration of American Ragtime and Gershwin. Dowling, a pianist, will perform an exciting program of American Ragtime and some works of George Gershwin, including his famous Rhapsody in Blue. The concert takes place at First United Methodist Church, 536 Coral Way, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $25. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 305-285-9060 or click here.

Through August 30

From now until the end of August, the Village of Merrick Park is honoring our four-legged friends with the month-long event, The Doggy Days of Summer. Bring your leashed dog to the pet friendly shopping destination on Sundays between 2 p.m. – 6 p.m. and enjoy special treats and in-store promotions from participating shops and restaurants including Adolfo Dominguez, Applemint, C'est Bon Café, Juicy Couture and Village. Through August 30

Need a fun summer venue for the whole family that won't break the bank? Check out Free Summer Sundays at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. The garden will open its doors and invite the public free of charge on Sundays during the month of August. This is the perfect opportunity to have a family picnic or just relax among the lush tropical foliage that has made Fairchild one of the most beautiful and premier gardens in the world.
