September 2, 12 & 26

Come to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Volunteer Information Days and learn all about how you can help become a volunteer. With a busy season around the corner, volunteers are needed to serve as guides, garden hosts and gardening assistants. Bilingual (English & Spanish) tour guides are especially needed on weekends. Come and meet the staff while you learn more about one of the world’s great botanic gardens. Information sessions will be held on September 2 at 9:30 a.m. and on September 12 & 26 at 10 a.m. Please park on the visitors center by the north entrance. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road in Coral Gables.

September 3 – October 1

There is a lot more to stress about these days, but luckily the Coral Gables Adult Activity Center is hoping to teach seniors how to manage it all. A new five-week workshop titled Life Without Stress will be offered by author Dr. Arthur Sokoloff. The classes, which will take place Thursdays at 1 p.m., center on the different philosophies to extract life's stresses. The cost of the workshop is $12. September 3

The University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum kicks off its popular LoweDown Happy Hour season with an Art Attack. Join Travel Channel host, Lee Sandstead for a discussion about art appreciation. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m. followed by a light reception. Non-members of the museum pay $10. The event is free for members. September 4

Join the fun every first Friday of the month, from 7 – 10 p.m. when Gables Gallery Night attracts collectors and young professionals to the art galleries, sidewalk tapas bars, fine restaurants and clubs in safe, comfortable downtown Coral Gables. Enjoy complementary refreshments, stroll through exhibitions of contemporary and modern Latin American, North American, and European art, including paintings, sculptures, textiles, works on paper and photography, along with art books, in a downtown area chock full of fascinating boutiques. September 9 – 19

The Jerry Herman Ring Theater opens up its 2009-2010 season with Smokey Joe's Café, a 1995 Broadway hit that celebrates Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's invention of Rock n' Roll. Featuring unforgettable musicals such as Love Potion #9, Spanish Harlem, Fools Fall in Love, and 40 other classic rock n' roll hits. The Jerry Herman Ring Theater is located at 1312 Miller Drive on the Coral Gables campus of the University of Miami.

September 11

The Walestein Symphony Orchestra will feature its best member in a chamber music concert as part of the “A Romantic Evening With Tchikovsky” series at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Miami Gusman Concert Hall. The program will spotlight the works of the great Russian composer which include Piano Trio in A Minor, String Quartet No. 1 in D Major, and the beloved Souvenir de Florence String Sextet. The Gusman Concert Hall is located at 1314 Miller Drive in Coral Gables. Ticket prices are $10, $15, $25 and $30. Fore more information, click here.

September 12

The University of Miami’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute invites you to an Open House this Saturday at 2 p.m. Learning and growing are important pieces of the happiness puzzle and can also provide excellent stress management opportunities. The Institute is looking for enthusiastic, curious, experienced, active and alert adults to participate in a knowledge seeking educational program. September 13

Sunday Afternoons of Music presents the first concert of its 2009-2010 season with violinist Robert McDuffie and pianist Elizabeth Pridgen. McDuffie has appeared as soloist with most of the major orchestras of the world. McDuffie is a Grammy nominated artist with several violin concertos recordings. Through September 13

GableStage Theater is pleased to announce the final play of its season: Speed the Plow, a hilarious, acid-etched satire that depicts Hollywood as a culture of corruption. Telling the story of two greedy Hollywood executives that are set to pitch a can't-lose deal to the studio boss, but a seductive secretary complicates everything. September 14

The Coral Gables Fire Department is offering residents the opportunity to learn a lifesaving skill. A Heart Saver CPR / AED Class is being offered to residents for free. During this one-day class, participants will learn how to perform CPR effectively and properly use an Automatic External Defibrillator. The class takes place at Coral Gables Fire Station #3, 11911 Old Cutler Road, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. The class includes hands on training and a written test. A certification card will be issued to the individuals who pass the class. The card will be valid for two years. Through September 27

New Theatre kicks off its 2009-2010 season with the William Shakespeare classic, The Taming of the Shrew. The play centers on a violently tempered woman and her strong-willed husband. Both end up wreaking havoc on the conventions of courtship and marriage, a classic battle of the sexes. Performances are held Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. For more information or ticket prices, call 305-443-5909 or click here.
