September 17

Experience Inner Power and Protection, a local event held at the University of Miami that will explore the need each one has for an innate sense of strength and safety. Special guest speaker is Sister Mohini, a spiritual leader for more than 50 years and president in the U.S. of the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual Organization. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is being offered free of charge as a community service. The Jerry Herman Ring Theater opens up its 2009-2010 season with Smokey Joe's Café, a 1995 Broadway hit that celebrates Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's invention of Rock 'n' Roll. Featuring unforgettable musicals such as Love Potion #9, Spanish Harlem, Fools Fall in Love, and 40 other classic rock n' roll hits. September 20

The Miami Bach Society presents its 2009-2010 Concert Season with a Duo Harpsichord Recital at 4 p.m. Sisters Laura and Nieves DeArmas from Uruguay will perform Baroque music from Germany at Plymouth Congregational Church, 3400 Devon Road. Season concert tickets are $30 for general admission; $40 for preferred admission. Students 18 years of age and under are admitted free of charge. Pastoral Care Services at Doctors Hospital and the Coral Gables Community Foundation are hosting a special event for caregivers called Caring for Someone with Alzheimer's Disease. The presentation allows caregivers to increase their knowledge of the disease and hopefully educate others. The event takes place at the cafeteria at Doctors Hospital, 5000 University Drive from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Those interested in attending should contact Linda Hancock by phone at 786-308-3800 or by email at linahan@baptisthealth.net.

Morton’s The Steakhouse is celebrating the launch of their newest cookbook, Morton's The Cookbook: 100 Steakhouse Recipes for Every Kitchen, by hosting a series of cookbook tour parties. The evening will include a sampling of recipes from Morton's The Cookbook paired with a selection of fine wine and cocktails. Guests will also get a chance to meet Tylor Fields III, VP of Wine and Spirits for Morton’s The Steakhouse and also co-author of Morton’s The Cookbook and have an opportunity to bid on fabulous auction items such as ‘Morton’s Chef Table,’ where six guests will enjoy a personal wine dinner paired with a signature Morton’s menu. Auction proceeds will benefit Feeding America, and locally, the Daily Bread Food Bank. The event takes place at Morton’s, 2333 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, from 6-7:30 p.m. Tickets are $39 per person which includes food, drink, tax, gratuity and a $5 donation to the Daily Bread Food Bank. Books & Books, in collaboration with the Florida Center for Literary Arts, presents a lecture with author Sue Monk Kidd. She has touched millions of readers with her novels The Secret Life of Bees and The Mermaid Chair and with her acclaimed nonfiction. In this intimate dual memoir, she and her daughter, Ann Taylor Kidd, offer distinct perspectives as a fifty-something and a twenty-something, each on a quest to redefine herself and to rediscover each other. A wise and involving book about feminine thresholds, spiritual growth, and renewal, Traveling with Pomegranatesis both a revealing self-portrait by a beloved author and her daughter, a writer in the making, and a momentous story that will resonate with women everywhere. Reading takes place at 7:30 p.m. at the Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 De Soto Boulevard, across the street from the Biltmore Hotel. The fifth annual Taste of the Gables is a unique opportunity for area businesses and individuals to participate in a selective and sophisticated fundraiser event to benefit the St. Theresa Sports Society. Alumni, parents and the entire community can enjoy an extravaganza of culinary delights and premiere wine and spirits. September 24

Join us for a “very merry unbirthday” at Paper Emporium as Catalina Rojas of Puro Papel celebrates the launch of her cheeky and cheerful “Party in a Box” from 7–9 p.m. Cava, cupcakes and chocolates from Peter Brooke Chocolatier will be served along with a healthy dose of Catalina’s creativity and flair for packing each box with all the paper paraphernalia necessary to get your party started. Through September 27

New Theatre kicks off its 2009-2010 season with the William Shakespeare classic, The Taming of the Shrew. The play centers on a violently tempered woman and her strong-willed husband. Both end up wreaking havoc on the conventions of courtship and marriage, a classic battle of the sexes. September 30 through November 1

Actors’ Playhouse presents the new pop musical comedy and current off-Broadway sensation, The Marvelous Wonderettes. Featuring favorite songs from the 50s and 60s, this musical takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. Performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $40, and Friday and Saturday evenings are $48. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with proper I.D.
