New Theatre is pleased to begin its 2009-2010 New Voices Reading Series with playwright Kirk Citron’s new work, But Not for Lunch. This play reading begins at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. In this reading, Hugo, a successful attorney suddenly finds himself retired and he decides that his wife Janet should join him in reaping the rewards of a long career. A few years younger than Hugo, Janet is on her way “up,” and she is not interested in letting go of her career. New Theater is located at 4120 Laguna Street. For more information, call 305-443-5909.

Lovers of great piano music from the Romantic Period are in for a treat. The University of Miami Festival Miami presents pianist Kevin Kenner in concert. During this unique concert, Kenner will perform several works by Chopin and other composers. The concert will take place at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $20 – $30. The University of Miami Festival Miami presents Jeff Hamilton and John Clayton with Dean Shelton Berg and Faculty Artists in a concert of jazz and beyond. The membership program Coral Gables@HOME, which helps seniors maintain their independence at home, has teamed up with Doctors Hospital for the presentation Nutrition Q&A: What Do I Eat to Feel Great? Nutritionist Danielle Rodriguez will discuss how nutritional needs change over time. The seminar for seniors will take place at the cafeteria of Doctors Hospital, 5000 University Drive, at 2:30 p.m. The nutrition seminar is free and open to the public but registration is required. Celebrate Halloween a day early with a Pumpkin Party hosted by Gym Kidz. The fun starts at 10 a.m. and includes a special appearance by a favorite children's character, bounce house, obstacle course, face painting, crafts, goodies, costume contest and much more! October 30 – January 24, 2010

The UM Lowe Art Museum presents the exhibition, Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire.  The display presents the reconstruction of an ancient mosaic floor from a synagogue in Tunisia. The Museum is also exhibiting Kitchen Dreams by glass artist Ricky Bernstein. The Lowe Art Museum is located at 1301 Stanford Drive. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sunday: 12 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Monday: closed. October 31

Downtown Coral Gables will be welcoming ghouls, ghosts and witches to the 12th annual Halloween on the Mile. Bring your children to Miracle Mile from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. for an afternoon of trick or treating at stores, a scavenger hunt, costume contest and much more. Through November 1

Actors’ Playhouse presents the new pop musical comedy and current off-Broadway sensation, The Marvelous Wonderettes. Featuring favorite songs from the 50s and 60s, this musical takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. Performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $40, and Friday and Saturday evenings are $48. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with proper I.D. November 1 – 21

The architects and designers in the American Institute of Architects are presenting Celebrate Architecture + Design in a series of 34 tours, lectures, fun events, exhibits, competitions, receptions, culminating on November 21 with the AIA Miami Design Award Gala. November 3

The Greater Miami Symphonic Band Concert presents its 31st season opening concert featuring guest soloist Adam Frey, Euphonium. The 85-member symphonic band will be joined by Frey, one of the world’s elite brass soloists. The performance will be held at 8 p.m. at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, on the University of Miami Coral Gables Campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. November 5

The Coral Gables Museum continues its pre-opening programming with a Preservation Education Workshop Series. The process of designating a home historic can be overwhelming but during this role-playing workshop Historic Designation is Demystified. A panel of experts explains and simplifies the process for residents and homeowners. The panel will consist of experts such as preservation attorneys, city planners, preservation officers, and architects. This workshop will take place at the City Commission Chambers, 405 Biltmore Way, at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public however seating is limited and reservations are required. WDNA 88.9 FM presents a series of concerts with the University of Miami, with a first concert featuring the arrangements of Matt Harris and UM Frost Concert Jazz Band. November 6

From the Appalachian spirituals of the Great Awakening to the folk music of the American frontier, Seraphic Fire explores the joy and hopefulness of a people rejoicing. Catch the chamber choir’s latest concert, I'll Fly Away: American Gospel and Folk Music, as part of its summer series. November 6 & 7

Come witness the launch of this first-of-its-kind program that could make a lifesaving difference to both older drivers (60+) and their loved ones. CarFit, coordinated by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UM, offers older adults the opportunity to check how their personal cars “fit” them. Trained professionals will lead older drivers through a 12-point checklist with their vehicle, and recommend card adjustments and adaptations. The program is held November 6 from 4-8 p.m. and November 7 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Coral Gables Campus, 1550 Brescia Avenue. November 6 – 8

Imagine a design/build competition where structures must be made from canned goods. That's exactly the premise behind Canstruction, a charity committed to ending hunger by using canned goods and architecture as a catalyst for change. The Coral Gables Museum is the only South Florida institution granted a license by Canstruction to host a local segment of this national competition. The public is invited to attend and view the entries at the Museum's temporary offices at 275 Giralda Avenue. Once the competition is over, all canned goods will be donated to the Daily Bread Food Bank. The Gold-Diggers, Inc., a local women’s charity organization,  is hosting its annual fall fundraiser “A Winter Wonderland” from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Riviera Country Club, 1155 Blue Road. Dinner will be served at 7:30 p.m., to be followed by music and dancing. The organization raises funds to benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Florida and The Food for Life Network. Steinway Piano Gallery Coral Gables presents pianist Sofiya Uryvayeva with “Romantic Fireworks.” The concert takes place at Steinway Piano Gallery, 4104 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, at 6:30 p.m.  Admission is free. For more information, call 305-774-9878.

November 7 & 8

The South Florida Palm Society will host the 2009 Fall Palm Sale featuring the world’s largest sale of rare and exotic palms. The sale will be held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Admission to Fairchild is $20, and is free to garden members. November 8

Miami Bach Society continues its season with a performance of late medieval music by Asteria, a duo with Eric Redlinger and Sylvia Rhyne playing vocal and instrumental music. Called Un Tre Doulx Regard, the program features love songs from Burgundy written in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The performance takes place at 4 p.m. at the Teatro Area Stage, 1560 South Dixie Highway. Tickets for the performance are $30 regular admission, $40 preferred seating. Introduce your children to musical concerts created just for them. Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children will include the classic tale of Peter & the Wolf. The event highlights the work of Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev. The University of Miami's Frost Symphony Orchestra will help portray the cast of characters. The performance takes place at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, 1314 Miller Drive, at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults and $10 for children. New Theatre presents the world premiere of In Development by David Caudle. During a conference for aspiring playwrights, sex, death and dramaturgy takes center stage. The previous year's conference had dire consequences and this year is poised for the same. Follow the intriguing plot and with all its twists and turns. GableStage at the Biltmore presents the first play of the 2009-2010 season with the southeastern premiere of Reasons to be Pretty. Don’t miss this edgy and darkly comic love story about the impossibility of love and the subjectivity of beauty. Performances take place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m.; Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 p.m. GableStage is located in the eastern section of the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue.
