Events Roundup Here is a partial list of upcoming cultural events in Coral Gables. November 12 Participate in an environmental discussion with Joe Browder, an environmental lobbyist in D.C. and founder of the Environmental Policy Center. University of Miami Friends of the Libraries will be hosting the event. Browder served under President Jimmy Carter's administration as an official of the U.S. Department of Interior to advise the Department on energy, natural resources and environmental matters. The discussion will take place at the Otto G. Richter Library – Special Collections, 1300 Memorial Drive, on the University of Miami campus. November 12 The Coral Gables Museum, in association with the Miami Chapter of American Institute of Architects invites you to a presentation regarding the coral rock construction of the museum. The presentation titled Coral Gables: A Jewel from the Sea, Will It Return? will be conducted by Dr. Harold R. Wanless, professor of Geological Sciences in the College or Arts and Sciences at the University of Miami. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, takes place at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Avenue, at 7 p.m. Reservations are required as seating is limited. November 13 The Special Olympics of Miami-Dade County presents the Second Annual Fall Fashion Event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Biltmore Hotel. November 13 – 15 Some Enchanted Evening – The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein is a musical revue of some of their best and most beloved songs. Help find a cure and raise awareness by participating in the 2009 Miami Dade Memory Walk. The walk will start at 9 a.m. and end at Merrick Park located across from City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way. Approximately 1,500 people are expected to participate in this event. This event is part of the American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter's annual month-long series of activities, Celebrate Architecture + Design 2009. Proceeds will benefit the Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables. Patron tickets are $50, including reception and architect's lecture. Tour only tickets are $30. November 16 Books & Books presents a conversation with Andre Agassi, one of the most beloved athletes in history, at 6:30 p.m. Agassi will discuss his new autobiography “Open” with Miami Herald Sports Editor Edwin Pope. November 16 – 20 The Launch Pad, UM’s entrepreneurship resource center presents Global Entrepreneurship Week with a series of events geared toward exposing students and alumni to furthering their goals. November 19 – 21 Wine & Fashion Florence will be held at the Biltmore Hotel to promote Tuscan food and fashion. The program includes fashion shows, culinary demonstrations, wine and olive oil tastings, movie screenings and displays of Italian products. The free event, organized by the Beacon Council and Consorzio Terre del Levante Fiorentino, takes place from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. The Biltmore Hotel is located at 1200 Anastasia Avenue. November 19 – December 26 Make the holidays more magical for your children when you take them to see Madeline's Christmas, a holiday production of the Theatre for Young Audiences at the Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre. November 20 – 21 The University of Miami Frost Opera Theater presents the second annual Wall to Wall Opera for All Festival. The festival kicks off on Friday at 8 p.m. with a preview concert of Mozart Here and Now and continues on Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday events are free. November 20 – 22 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden knows how popular its Ramble Festival is, so this year it has been extended to a three-day event. Fairchild's Ramble Festival will offer visitors a variety of plants, garden accessories, antiques, food, music and activities for adults and children. With over 15,000 plants for sale, several culinary demonstrations, antique garden accessories, homemade chocolate and thousands of rare botanical books, this year's festival is sure to please. The festival runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The 69th annual Ramble Festival takes place on the grounds of Fairchild Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road. A Cuban mother defies a custody ruling, kidnaps her estranged daughter and the two drive west in search of the authentic American experience. This funny performance reminds us that the best souvenirs on the road of life are the relationships we make along the way. November 21 Calling all young artists! The Miami-Dade County Public Library System is looking for young artists to participate in its Make-a-Bookmark Contest. The annual contest is open to children ages 6-12. Children are invited to submit a drawing of a favorite character or scene from a book to reflect this year's theme “Rediscover Your Neighborhood @ the Library.” Entries must be original work and will be judged on creativity and neatness. Submit drawings to the Coral Gables Branch Library, 3443 Segovia Street, by November 21. Through November 21 The architects and designers in the American Institute of Architects are presenting Celebrate Architecture + Design in a series of 34 tours, lectures, fun events, exhibits, competitions, receptions, culminating on November 21 with the AIA Miami Design Award Gala. Through November 22 GableStage at the Biltmore presents the first play of the 2009-2010 season with the southeastern premiere of Reasons to be Pretty. For reservations or information, call the box office at 305-445-1119. Through January 24, 2010 The UM Lowe Art Museum presents the exhibition, Tree of Paradise: Jewish Mosaics from the Roman Empire. The display presents the reconstruction of an ancient mosaic floor from a synagogue in Tunisia. The Museum is also exhibiting Kitchen Dreams by glass artist Ricky Bernstein. The Lowe Art Museum is located at 1301 Stanford Drive. Museum hours are Tuesday-Saturday: 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Sunday: 12 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Monday: closed.
