Events Roundup Here is a partial list of upcoming cultural events in Coral Gables. November 25 The Coral Gables Congregational Church will host an Interfaith Thanksgiving Eve Service, at 7 p.m. The theme of this year’s service is “Many Voices, One Earth.” The church is located at 3010 DeSoto Boulevard, directly across from the Biltmore Hotel. November 28 The Actors’ Playhouse at Miracle Theatre presents an exhibition by Miami native and renowned artist Clifford Bailey, from 5-9 p.m. Bailey, a graduate of the New York’s School of Visual Arts, is best known for his musical ensemble and portrait paintings that evoke the era and ambiance of the roaring twenties with a modern twist. All work on display will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Actors’ Playhouse, located at 280 Miracle Mile. For more information, click here. December 2 The Junior Orange Bowl Committee presents the Caroling Competition for Dade and Broward County Middle and Senior High School Choirs at the steps of the 550 Biltmore Way building. The competition begins December 2 from 7-10 p.m. and ends on December 6 with performances from 3-6 p.m. Six schools will perform each evening. This year the competition welcomes 28 public, private and parochial schools, competing for $20,000 cash. All the events are free and open to the public. December 2 Paper Emporium, located at 231 Aragon Avenue, in collaboration with Caspari invites you to “Coffee and Caspari,” a fundraiser in support of The Young Patronesses of the Opera. December 2 – 27 From the creators of Married ALIVE! comes a musical comedy that gives people cause to examine what the holiday season is really about. Another Night Before Christmas provides a timeless look at the dilemmas and joys of the holiday season and parallels the emotions of the memorable film Miracle on 34th Street. Performances take place at the Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile, Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $40 for weeknights and Sunday matinees, $48 for Friday and Saturday evenings. December 3 The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and Berenfeld present the 13 Annual Holiday Party “Toyland.” Over 30 of our community's finest restaurants will showcase their delicious treats and eats. Simply bring a new unwrapped gift for a child or senior. Any gifts, toys and monetary donations will be distributed among several charities. The event takes place at the Biltmore Hotel Country Club Ballroom, 1200 Anastasia Avenue, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The cost of admission for members is $25 and $35 for non-members. University of Miami Professor and Landscape Architect Joanna Lombard will introduce guests to historic and native materials for holiday decorating. The Coral Gables Garden Club will provide hands-on help for this fun and informative workshop. The Holiday Decorating with Native and Found Materials will take place at The Danielson Gallery at The Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue, at 7 p.m. The workshop is free and open to the public however seating is limited and reservations are required. December 3 The University of Miami Friends of the Libraries presents Josephine Johnson and her book SS Asteroid or Tell it to the Bees, a semi-fictive memory of a historic steamship moored on the river Adur in Sussex. The evening starts with a wine and cheese reception at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 7 p.m. at the Otto G. December 5 The Merrick Educational Center PTA’s first Rummage Sale will take place from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the Merrick Educational Center, a public school located in Coral Gables. The event takes place at 39 Zamora Avenue. December 5 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden presents a major outdoor exhibition by internationally acclaimed artist Yayoi Kusama. Her distinctive sculptures and paintings that involve hand-worked repetition and bold patterning will be in exhibit including the “Flowers that Bloom at Midnight,” a group of her classic “Pumpkins,” as well as a multi-part floating work specifically conceived for one of Fairchild’s large garden ponds. The exhibit will be on view through May 30, 2010. Fairchild is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. December 5 Writers are encouraged to bring their original poems, short stories and other Spanish works to Luz del Corazon's first International Literary Exchange. December 6 The 24th season of Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children includes the very popular Tales & Scales in Arabian Nights Christmas Concert. The production has been performed over one million times for young people in schools, libraries, and community and performing art centers. A Cuban mother defies a custody ruling, kidnaps her estranged daughter and the two drive west in search of the authentic American experience.
