January 21

Come and experience Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden at night as moonlit tropical palms and world renowned art combine to create a beautiful setting for Family Movie Night. Enjoy a family friendly movie shown outside on the Garden House Lawn. Bring your blanket and picnic baskets to make it a truly special event. This event starts at 6 p.m. Fairchild is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. Admission is $10 for Fairchild members, $5 for member children ages 6-17, $15 for non-members, and $8 for non-member children ages 6-17. For more information, click here.

January 22 & 23

Area Stage Company presents the musical comedy and Tony Award-winner, the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. The play chronicles the experiences of six young overachievers vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The Area Stage Company is located at 1560 South Dixie Highway. January 23 & 30

The Coral Gables Farmers Market continues offering fresh produce, gourmet specialty food, baked goods, and a variety of plants and trees for purchase. Schedule for January 23: Tai Chi at Merrick Park (8 a.m.); Organic Bug Control presented by Andres Mejides of Elfin Acres Organic Farm (9 a.m.); The Art of Cheese Making by Sous Chefs 2 Go (10 a.m.); and The Wonders of Chocolate by Peterbrooke Chocolatier (11 a.m.). Schedule for January 30: Tai Chi at Merrick Park (8 a.m.); Perennials for the Shades presented by Wendy Flemming Saltzburg of Wendy’s Landscaping and Design; Cooking demonstration by Anacapri on Ponce (10 a.m.); and Lars the Polar Bear visit hosted by Books & Books. January 23 & 24

The popular International Chocolate Festival returns to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. For two days, guests will be able to learn about the origins of chocolate, taste several varieties of chocolates, purchase cacao trees, participate in cooking demonstrations and much more. The festival takes place at Fairchild Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors, and $10 for children 6-17. Through January 24

Studio glass artist Ricky Bernstein captures moments of frustration with the minor mishaps of modern life in oversized brightly colored glass cartoon wall reliefs. Bernstein's glass exhibition Kitchen Dreams is on display at the Lowe Art Museum on the University of Miami's Coral Gables campus, 1301 Stanford Drive. The Museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. January 24

Miami Civic Music Association presents internationally acclaimed pianist Tian Ying at 4 p.m., performing works by Chopin and Mussorgsky’s Pictures At An Exhibition. The concert takes place at Gusman Hall, 1314 Miller Drive on the University of Miami Campus. For ticket information, click here.

Through January 24

GableStage presents the Southeastern premiere of Farragut North by Beau Willimon. A highly publicized presidential primary race is the backdrop to the drama that unfolds during this play. A press secretary's meteoric rise falls prey to the backroom politics of more seasoned Washington operatives. This is an intriguing tale about loyalty, obsessive lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it. Performances take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets range in price from $37.50 to $45 depending on date and time. January 28 – March 27

The Actors' Playhouse Musical Theatre for Young Audiences kicks off the New Year with the Prince Street Player's version of the classic tale Jack and the Beanstalk. Based on the fairy tale by Joseph Jacobs, this wacky adventure takes the climb with Jack as he goes up the magical beanstalk into a world of friendly giants, evil barons, and dancing geese. January 29

Super Art in the Park is a Super Bowl sactioned event co-hosted by the Kiwanis of Little Havana, the City of Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Coral Gables. The event features a concert at 7 p.m. with the reggae music of Fourth Dimension, followed by the smooth rock sounds of Jacob Jeffries Band at 8 p.m. The fusion of music continues with the soul music of Ketchy Shuby at 9 p.m. and culminates with Latin funk by DJ Le Spam and The Spam Allstarts. Don’t miss the art exhibit of local artists and special appearances throughout the evening by sports stars. Admission is free. Super Art in the Park takes place at Fred B. Harnett/Ponce Circle Park, 2810 Ponce de Leon Boulevard.

January 29

The women of Seraphic Fire present a program of music which includes the Song of Solomon from the Hebrew Scriptures. The performance titled Kisses of His Mouth will take place at First United Methodist Church, 536 Coral Way, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here.

January 31

Cyclocross is a form of bicycle racing that combines obstacles and several surfaces where you ride and carry your bike through a course. This demanding sport is coming to Coral Gables. What makes the Tropical Cyclocross so unique is that it is taking place on the grounds of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. Beginners are welcomed. The first race starts at 8:30 a.m. There are several categories including kids, single speed and women. Fairchild Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. February 1

Jazz lovers won't want to miss the Miami Saxophone Quartet coming to concert at Maurice Gusman Concert Hall. The performance is scheduled for 8 p.m. Gusman Hall is located on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus at 1314 Miller Drive. For more information, click here.

February 5

You have until January 25 to reserve your tickets to the very popular Daddy & Daughter Dance, which takes place on Friday, February 5 from 7-9 p.m. Come enjoy an elegant evening that you and your daughter will truly cherish. This Valentine’s  tradition will be held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden at 10901 Old Cutler Road. Expect dinner, music, dancing, pictures and lots of fun. Advance reservations are required. Through February 7

The Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre continues its 2009-2010 season with the musical comedy The Great American Trailer Park Musical. The play has been described as a cross between South Park and Desperate Housewives. Don't miss this outrageous, fun-filled high-powered musical. The Actors' Playhouse is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Performances are held Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $40 for weeknights and Sunday matinees, $48 for Friday and Saturday evenings. Through February 14

New Theatre presents the world premiere of The Hour of the Tiger by Sandra Riley. In this play, an American woman, immersed in Japan's post Vietnam terrain, is tangled between rescuing a geisha from her money hungry master and conquering her own fears. Performances take place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for Thursday and Sunday evenings and $40 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday matinees.
