February 4

The University of Miami Frost School of Music and WDNA-FM present In Celebration of Afro-Cuban Music, a concert with Sammy Figueroa and Mark O’Connor as special guests, at 8 p.m. Figueroa is regarded as one of the world’s leading percussionists. O’Connor is a product of America’s rich aural folk tradition as well as classical and flamenco music. The concert takes place at the Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Road. General admission is $20. Downtown Coral Gables’ Restaurant Row, located on the 100 block of Giralda Avenue between Ponce de Leon Boulevard and Galiano Street, will be bustling with al fresco dining and live entertainment as part of Giralda Under the Stars. The street will be closed at 6 p.m. allowing for pedestrians to enjoy dinner and an evening stroll under the stars. From the local dinner crowd looking to walk to their favorite neighborhood restaurant to the traveling gourmand seeking a new scene, Downtown Coral Gables has something for every palate. Don’t miss the popular Daddy & Daughter Dance, which takes place on Friday, February 5 from 7-9 p.m. Come enjoy an elegant evening that you and your daughter will truly cherish. This Valentine’s tradition will be held at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden at 10901 Old Cutler Road. Expect dinner, music, dancing, pictures and lots of fun. Advance reservations are required. Momentum Dance Company presents Fish Tales at the Coral Gables Branch Library, 3443 Segovia Street, at 11 a.m. This free concert is part of the of Momentum’s 2010 outstanding children’s program. For more information, contact 305-460-5600.

February 6 – April 4

Forty Cuban born artists who live in and outside of Cuba use subtle devices or irony, metaphor and ambiguity to challenge accepted artistic and political discourse. Their collective artworks make up the exhibition Cuba Avant-Garde: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Farber Collection which is on display at the Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami. The Museum which is located at 1301 Stanford Drive is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission costs $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens. The Coral Gables Museum continues its preopening Preservation Education program with a Historic Preservation Expo at the Coral Gables Farmers Market. Preservation techniques, green building materials, local products, artisans and more will be found at this fun and informative expo at the Coral Gables Farmers Market. Learn about the variety of businesses, organizations and people working to build a greener South Florida. February 6

Sunday Afternoons of Music presents one of the most sought-after trios in the world, the Eroica Trio. Pianist Erika Nickrenz, violinist Susie Park and cellist Sara Sant' Ambrogio have thrilled audiences around the world with their flawless technical virtuosity and irresistible enthusiasm. This will be a special Saturday performance that will take place at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive; at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for general admission, $30 for seniors and $10 for students. The Coral Gables Farmers Market continues offering fresh produce, gourmet specialty food, baked goods, and a variety of plants and trees for purchase. February 6 is Green Day at the Market and the schedule is as follows: Tai Chi at Merrick Park (8 a.m.); Organic Composting by Andres Mejides of Elfin Acres Organic Farm (9 a.m.); Cooking demonstration by Green Gables Café (10 a.m.); and Coral Gables Elementary School students discuss their school’s urban garden (11 a.m.).  Schedule for February 13: Tai Chi at Merrick Park (8 a.m.); Herb Gardening by Carolyn Coppolo of the Redland Herb Farm (9 a.m.); Cooking Demonstration by Whisk Gourmet (10 a.m.); and the Coral Gables Youth Center presents a fun Valentine’s activity (11 a.m.). If you would like to honor the men and women in the U.S. Armed Forces, make sure you participate in the Tribute to the Military 5k Run. The run/walk will honor those who serve and have served in our military. The event takes place at Merrick Park in front of City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way, at 8 a.m. The entry fee for civilians is $35, active duty personnel from all branches, Reserve, National Guard, and ROTC is $20, and immediate family of active duty personnel is $25. The event benefits families of deployed personnel, the Fisher House VA Medical Center, and Operation Brave Kids. For more information, call 305-666-7223.

The Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre continues its 2009-2010 season with the musical comedy The Great American Trailer Park Musical. The play has been described as a cross between South Park and Desperate Housewives. Don't miss this outrageous, fun-filled high-powered musical. The Actors' Playhouse is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Performances are held Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $40 for weeknights and Sunday matinees, $48 for Friday and Saturday evenings. World Tango Champion, Monica Llobet, is hosting a Valentine's Dance that depicts the Passion of Tango. Beginners and advanced students will dance the night away and enjoy specially selected wines from Argentina. The event starts at 8 p.m. at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue. Llobet will be teaching beginners some of the basic tango moves. At 10 p.m. the class ends and the fun begins as you share the dance floor with experienced tango dancers. The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami will host a reception and special lecture given by the preeminent sculptor Michael Lucero, at 7 p.m. Lucero has become known for employing painted underglazes on shapes that don’t necessarily relate to the image. February 11

Experience the beauty of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden at night. Enjoy samples of a variety of wines while listening to an art lecture. The Wine Tasting and Art Lecture event at Fairchild begins at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Bob Petzinger will be informing guests about the different art pieces at Fairchild Garden. Admission is $10 for Fairchild members, $5 for member children ages 6-17, $15 for non-members, and $8 for non-member children ages 6-17. Fairchild is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. The Dante Alighieri Society presents the Duo Trivella & The Bergonzi Quartet. The duo will have two pianos and perform with the music of Donizetti, Trovesi and Giovanni Sgambati in a special transcription for four hands and a string quartet. This performance marks a first time collaboration between the Dranoff and the Bergonzi Quartet. The event takes place at the Gusman Concert Hall at the University of Miami, 1314 Miller Drive, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 for general admission and $50 for VIP tickets with reception. The University of Miami Friends of the Libraries hosts a program to discuss the sites and encounters that link Euro-African contact and the slave trade during the 15th through 19th Century. Director of Africana Studies at the University of Miami Edmund Abaka will lead discussion during the program and will also discuss his project, House of Slaves & “Door of No Return”: Gold Coast/Ghana Slave Forts and Castles and the Euro-African Encounters of the 15th-19th Century. Head over to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden on the most romantic days of the year for an outdoor concert featuring multiple Grammy winner, Jon Secada. Don't miss this Valentine's Day Concert where you can bring your blankets and picnic baskets and enjoy Fairchild's most romantic event. The garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. New Theatre presents the world premiere of The Hour of the Tiger by Sandra Riley. In this play, an American woman, immersed in Japan's post Vietnam terrain, is tangled between rescuing a geisha from her money hungry master and conquering her own fears. Performances take place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for Thursday and Sunday evenings and $40 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday matinees. February 15

The Coral Gables Museum will hold its First Annual Presidents Day Golf Tournament. The event will take place at the Biltmore Hotel Golf Course, 1200 Anastasia Avenue. Sponsorships and all player levels include greens fees, carts, a breakfast buffet, and the awards luncheon with open bar. Through March 27

The Actors' Playhouse Musical Theatre for Young Audiences kicks off the New Year with the Prince Street Player's version of the classic tale Jack and the Beanstalk. Based on the fairy tale by Joseph Jacobs, this wacky adventure takes the climb with Jack as he goes up the magical beanstalk into a world of friendly giants, evil barons, and dancing geese. Performances are on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $17. The Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre is located at 280 Miracle Mile.
