April 14 Coral Gables business owners can attend the County Mayor’s Business Development Expo which brings several interesting presentations and table top exhibits. April 14 The Tribal Arts Society is hosting a lecture at the University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum. UM professor of Art History Karen R. Mathews will give a presentation titled Sex, Death and Magic: The Interpretation of Paleolithic Cave Paintings in Spain and France. The Tribal Arts Society is dedicated to exploring the arts and archaeology of lesser known cultures of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the South Pacific. April 15 – 18 The University of Miami Frost Opera Theatre presents a double bill of two one-act operas. Strawberry Fields by Michael Torke and A.R. Gurney and Ballymore: Part 1, Winners by Richard Wargo. April 15 The University of Miami Friends of the Library brings you a special program featuring award winning photographer Clyde Butcher. April 15 Come and experience Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden at night as moonlit tropical palms and world renowned art combine to create a beautiful setting for a howling good time. Enjoy this Howl at the Moon event where you get to bring your dog to Fairchild for the evening. Your four-legged friend is sure to enjoy the scenery and participate in some dog-gone activities. This event starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m. Fairchild is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. Admission is $10 for Fairchild members, $5 for member children ages 6-17, $15 for non-members, and $8 for non-member children ages 6-17. For more information, click here April 16 The City of Coral Gables understands parents deserve a special night out every once in a while. The Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center offers a monthly program called Parents' Night Out to help parents reconnect with each other as they disconnect with their children. The Youth Center, 405 University Drive, will host a sleep-over party for children ages 5 – 14 filled with special activities throughout the night. Guests are given an evening snack and breakfast the next morning. Drop off the kids on Friday at 7 p.m. and pick them up on Saturday at 9 a.m. The program costs $30 - $50 depending on resident/ member status. The deadline to register is April 14. The festival will feature Mediterranean food, dance, music and a small bazaar from 11 a.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday. St. George is located at 320 Palermo Avenue. For more information, call 305-444-6541. April 16 Do you have what it takes to be a boss? Take the FIU be the Boss Challenge. A small mobile video production set will be operational just outside Tarpon Bend, 65 Miracle Mile, between the hours of 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Test out your skills at being a boss when you act out funny scenes with improve actors. The videos will be uploaded to FaceBook and YouTube where the videos will be rated. The person with the highest rating wins an Apple Ipad. For more information, click here. April 17 Actors’ Playhouse and Lexus of Kendall host the 19th Annual Reach for the Stars Gala Auction at the Miracle Theater beginning at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will have a chance to bid on over $300,000 worth of live and silent auction items while enjoying dinner provided by 30 of Coral Gables’ finest restaurants. Guest auctioneer will be former TV personality Bob Soper. Proceeds of the event benefit the Miracle Theatre and the Actors’ Playhouse 2010-2011 season. Admission is $150 per person. This is a wonderful opportunity to see and purchase these beautiful and easy-to-grow plants. For more information, click here. April 17 The Coral Gables branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System presents a dance performance for children. The Momentum Dance Company performs Peter and the Wolf, a children's favorite. This classic folk tale by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev will feature Peter, his friends the Bird and the Duck as they work together to outwit and capture the fierce Wolf. Each character is represented by a different instrument of the orchestra. April 19 – May 15 The Coral Gables Police Department is offering those women who have completed the basic self-defense program designed by R.A.D. (Resist Aggression Defensively) an Advance RAD program. The Advanced RAD program builds upon techniques that were learned in Basic RAD but deals with defending against multiple attackers, weapons, and various other techniques. This program is intensive. The cost of the program is $100. April 19 The April meeting of the Miami Memorabilia Collectors Club is the annual open house event honoring Dade Heritage Days. At this meeting, members are encouraged to bring Miami memorabilia to exhibit relating to the theme New Faces/Old Places. The public is invited to come, look, swap items and just enjoy. April 19 The Adult Activity Center is hosting its monthly Lunch and Lecture program. The event consists of a complimentary lunch followed by a guest speaker. This month the topic is Story Telling Brought to Life. Nancy Avera will be acting out a story in full costume. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. and is followed by the guest speaker. April 20 – May 4 The Coral Gables Police Department's Community Affairs Unit is offering a Children's Self-Defense Program designed by radKIDS (Resist Aggression Defensively). Certified police instructors will provide opportunities for children to learn life skills regarding safety, options, and realistic and empowering choices to escape violence. Classes are designed for children ages 5-7 and 8-12. Classes will be held at the Coral Gables Police Department, 2801 Salzedo Street, on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The program costs $50 per child. Families with more than one child will receive a $20 discount for each additional child. (First child: $50, Second child: $30, Third child: $10) Scholarships are available. April 21 – May 1 The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre presents Rent. Based on Puccini's classic opera La Boheme, Rent is a revolutionary rock opera that tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling to live and pay their rent in the gritty background of New York's East Village. Playing for over 12 years, Rent went on to become one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. Performances take place Wednesdays thru Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Ring Theatre is located at 1312 Miller Drive. April 22 Come listen to the award winning University of Miami Frost Salsa Orchestra with its unique sound blending jazz vocals, straight ahead swing, funk and fusion with the more traditional sounds in Afro-Caribbean music. The band has featured musicians like Silvano Monasterios, Jason Carder, Barry Reiss, Alexander Pope Norris, Marko Marcinko and Shelly Berg among others. April 22 Seniors with busy schedules get together for dinner. "Let's Do Dinner!" is a special program for seniors 55+ to make friends and enjoy a great meal together. This event takes place on the 6th floor terrace of Mass Mutual, 2100 Ponce de Leon, at 4:30 p.m. The event includes free screenings from Baptist Health South Florida, educational breakout sessions, exhibits, door prizes and refreshments courtesy of The Palace. The four breakout session topics are: Because You Are Forgetful Doesn't Mean It's Alzheimer's; Healthy Weight Management for Life and Stress Reduction; What's New at The Palace of Coral Gables; and Good Retirement Decisions & Understanding Long Term Care. April 23 The 6th edition of The American Ideal will take place at First United Methodist Church. The Police Department is offering a free Self-Defense Workshop that will offer seniors vital knowledge and hands-on techniques to keep them safe. Reservations are required. The workshop will take place in the chapel in the senior center, 624 Anastasia Avenue, at 11:30 a.m. April 23 The Dance Now Ensemble joins forces with Dade Heritage Trust in a performance at the historic Coco Plum Woman's Club in Coral Gables. The evening of athletic and poignant dance will feature audience favorites from the company's decade of critically acclaimed repertory. The Coco Plum Woman's Club is located at 1375 Sunset Drive. April 24 – June 6 The University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum presents a UM Faculty Exhibition titled William Carlson: Aquila Non Capit Muscas (translation: An Eagle Does Not Catch Flies). Carlson will showcase glass wall sculptures. His examination of evolving forms of communication forms the base of his aesthetic focus. Based on a Yiddish story, The Quarrel by David Brandes and Joseph Telushkin tells the story of two friends, an Orthodox rabbi and a Jewish poet who has lost his faith - both Holocaust survivors. When they meet unexpectedly years later, it sparks a fierce battle of wits and a raw test of friendship faith and tolerance.
