May 12 – June 6

The Actors' Playhouse presents a new play Unreasonable Doubt, a dramatic story full of insight and compassion that takes an in-depth look at American justice and how it sometimes fails the society it's meant to protect. Performances take place Wednesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $42, and on Friday and Saturday evenings $50. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with identification. Seraphic Fire presents Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 – The 400th Anniversary Concert. A collection of sacred pieces demonstrating Monteverdi's mastery of composition and religion, the Vespers of 1610 has become the evolutionary link between the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Join Seraphic Fire to celebrate the 400th anniversary of this majestic work. The concert, also starring the Western Michigan University Chorale, will take place at First United Methodist Church at 7:30 p.m. The church is located at 536 Coral Way. Tickets cost $35. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden presents the 4th Annual Fairchild Artists in Bloom Exhibition and Sale. Fairchild art instructors and students will transform the Garden House into a gallery showcasing more than 150 original oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors and botanical illustrations. The exhibition and sale will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is free with garden admission. Admission costs $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children ages 6 - 17. May 14, 15, 21 & 22

A Disney classic is performed on the big stage. Miami Childrens Theater presents Disney's Aristocats. See how this tale of aristocratic and alley cats is transformed into a moving musical. Performances take place at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center Theater, 405 University Drive, at 8 p.m. with additional performances on Saturdays at 3 p.m. Tickets cost $14 for adults and $12 for children. The Chopin Foundation of the United States presents in concert the Finalists of the 2010 Chopin National Competition. Sunday Afternoons of Music continue with a concert by Empire Brass. Rolf Smedvig, Marc Reese, trumpet; Michelle Perry, French horn; Mark Hetzler, trombone, Kenneth Amis, tuba will be performing at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, at 4 p.m. The program includes classics such as: Morning Dance from Romeo and Juliet, Danse Arabe and Dance Russe, from The Nutcracker, Op. 71, 76 Trombones, from The Music Man (1957), among other others. Miami Children's Chorus presents the annual spring concert, Let the Children Sing with music director Timothy A. Sharp. New Theatre presents its final production of the 2009-2010 season: Raised in Captivity by Nicky Silver. This Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominated dark comedy starts with estranged twin siblings who are attending their mother's funeral, who was killed by a broken, flying shower head. Add in a husband, a ghost, a convicted murderer, a male escort and a therapist and what you get is a whacky, absurdist comedy about serious family values, relationships and self discovery. Raised in Captivity will play Thursday through Saturdays at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for Thursday and Sunday evening performances and $40 for all other performances. The Adult Activity Center is hosting its monthly Lunch and Lecture program. The event consists of a complimentary lunch followed by a discussion with a guest speaker. This month's discussion centers on the Alzheimer's Association. Reni Rizzo will be the guest speaker. She heads up a support group for caregivers. Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m. The Adult Activity Center is located at 624 Anastasia Avenue. Reservations are required no later than the second Thursday of the month. The Globe hosts the annual Cuba Libre Block Party on Friday, May 21, from 4 p.m. until 2 a.m. Come celebrate Cuba’s Independence Day with dancing, traditional Cuban food, cocktails and live performances by Los 3 de la Habana and Ramon Fabian Veloz. DJ Le Spam will spin hand-picked vintage Cuban music throughout the evening. The open air concert will be followed by a Tremenda Descarga after-party with a live show by Nil Lara inside The Globe Café. This event is sponsored by American Airlines and will benefit Miami’s Regis House. The block party takes place in front of the Globe Café, located at 377 Alhambra Circle. The event is free. The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce presents Italian Cooking Show: A Journey Through Regional Culinary Traditions. This event is the first in a series of four which puts two top chefs from renowned local Italian restaurants against each other in a culinary battle before an audience eager to learn the various cooking methods used in preparing some of Italy's most distinctive dishes. Audience members will then vote for their favorite dish. This event takes place at 6:30 p.m. at MiaCucina, 105 Miracle Mile. A reception will immediately follow the cooking demonstration until 9:30 pm. Admission for the cooking class and festival is $45, and $10 for just the festival. The Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce presents its 15th Annual Tour of the Gables 5K sponsored by Baptist Health. The run/walk has a 7:30 a.m. staggered start. The race starts in front of City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way and takes participants around the scenic Granada Golf Course before winding back to City Hall. The American Bougainvillea Society will showcase its namesake at the American Bougainvillea Society Plant Sale. Bougainvilleas are durable and adaptable, thrive on little to no care, and do well with little water. Join Fairchild and the American Bougainvillea Society for this eye-dazzling sale to take place in the Palmetum Lawn at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission costs $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children ages 6 - 17. Sunday Afternoons of Music concludes its 29th season with the world premiere of a work by Dr. Joel Hoffman from the University of Cincinnati, Amernet String Quartet & cellist Gary Hoffman. The Amernet Quartet has captured worldwide recognition as a contemporary and exceptional string quartet. Hoffman, one of the outstanding cellists of our time, combines instrumental mastery and great beauty of sound in his memorable performances. They premiere a new work by Dr. Joel Hoffman, University of Cincinnati. GableStage presents the Southeastern premier of The Quarrel. Based on a Yiddish story, The Quarrel by David Brandes and Joseph Telushkin tells the story of two friends, an Orthodox rabbi and a Jewish poet who has lost his faith - both Holocaust survivors. When they meet unexpectedly years later, it sparks a fierce battle of wits and a raw test of friendship faith and tolerance. Performances take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $37.50 to $45. The Actors' Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences presents Young King Arthur. The play created for children takes shows King Arthur as a child who soon discovers that with power come responsibilities and troubles, especially from his jealous brother Sir Kay and the evil knight Sir Ridley. With the help of Merlin the Magician and an outspoken peasant girl named Brynith, Young King Arthur discovers that real power comes not from swashbuckling and sorcery, but from the heart.
