January 6

Want to be a part of the spotlight? Miami Children’s Theater is holding Auditions for its upcoming musical play School House Rock. The audition will take place at the Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center Theater, 405 University Drive, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. Children, ages 10 – 21, must come prepared with a one minute monologue and a song from a musical. January 7

Ever wondered why historic preservation is so important in Coral Gables? The Coral Gables Museum continues its monthly series of Preservation Education with The Practicalities and Benefits of Historic Preservation. A panel of experts will illustrate the benefits whether you own a home or a business. January 9

The South Florida Writers Association and the Junior Orange Bowl Committee will be holding an Awards Ceremony for the 2009 Junior Orange Bowl Creative Writing Contest. The ceremony will be held at Books & Books, 265 Aragon Avenue, at 10 a.m. Come out and support our talented younger generation. January 9

Books & Books presents selling author Elizabeth Gilbert. The author will be at the Biltmore Hotel to introduce her new book “Committed: A Skeptic Makes Peace with Marriage.” The book was a true labor of love for Gilbert as it chronicles how she fell in love and the couple's promise never to wed. Gilbert's memoir is ultimately a clear-eyed celebration of love with all the complexity and consequence that real love, in the real world, actually entails. Tickets are required for this event which takes place at the Country Club Ballroom at the Biltmore, 1200 Anastasia Avenue, at 7:30 p.m.

January 9

Add musical flavor to your life with the Crosstown String Quartet. The innovative and eclectic group will be performing at the Coral Gables branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System. The Quartet will feature original compositions and arrangements that crossover from Classical to Jazz, Baroque to Latin, Bluegrass to Tango. This free event is part of the Coral Gables Community Concert Series. The performance takes place at 1 p.m. The Coral Gables Library is located at 3443 Segovia Street. January 10

Sunday Afternoons of Music will present a concert by the Cleveland Duo with violinist Steve Warner and pianist Carolyn Warner. The duo will join saxophonist James Umble for a unique musical experience to include traditional and classical, folk, ethnic and jazz. The performance takes place at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall at the University of Miami, 1314 Miller Drive, at 4 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for general admission, $30 for seniors and $10 for students. January 11 – March 5

The Miami Children's Theater Conservatory is offering professional theater training for young aspiring artists between the ages of 4 -19. The classes are designed to develop imagination, concentration, character, professionalism and technique. This dynamic program offers classed geared toward beginners exploring acting for the first time as well as for young actors with previous experience. January 13 – February 7

The Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre continues its 2009-2010 season with the musical comedy The Great American Trailer Park Musical. The play has been described as a cross between South Park and Desperate Housewives. Don't miss this outrageous, fun-filled high-powered musical. The Actors' Playhouse is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Performances are held Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $40 for weeknights and Sunday matinees, $48 for Friday and Saturday evenings. January 15

The City of Coral Gables understands parents deserve a special night out every once in a while. The Coral Gables War Memorial Youth Center offers a monthly program called Parents' Night Out to help parents reconnect with each other as they disconnect with their children. The Youth Center, 405 University Drive, will host a sleep-over party for children ages 5-14 filled with special activities throughout the night. Guests are given an evening snack and breakfast the next morning. Drop off the kids on Friday at 7 p.m. and pick them up on Saturday at 9 a.m. The program costs $30 - $50 depending on resident/ member status. The deadline to register is January 13. January 15

Experience one of the most popular Baroque works of all time. Seraphic Fire & Firebird Chamber Orchestra will be performing Antonio Vivaldi's Four Seasons (Le quattro stagione), which will take you on a musical journey through the four seasons. The concert titled Earth, Wind and Firebird will take place at First United Methodist Church, 536 Coral Way, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $35. For more information or to purchase tickets, click here.

January 15 – February 14

New Theatre presents the world premiere of The Hour of the Tiger by Sandra Riley. In this play, an American woman, immersed in Japan's post Vietnam terrain, is tangled between rescuing a geisha from her money hungry master and conquering her own fears. Performances take place on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. Tickets cost $35 for Thursday and Sunday evenings and $40 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday matinees. Through January 24

GableStage presents the Southeastern premiere of Farragut North by Beau Willimon. A highly publicized presidential primary race is the backdrop to the drama that unfolds during this play. A press secretary's meteoric rise falls prey to the backroom politics of more seasoned Washington operatives. This is an intriguing tale about loyalty, obsessive lust for power and the costs one will endure to achieve it. Performances take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets range in price from $37.50 to $45 depending on date and time.
