Events Roundup Here is a partial list of upcoming cultural events in Coral Gables. June 23 – August 7 Closing out the Actors' Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences is the fun play Pippi Longstocking. Written by Thomas W. Olson and based on the children's books by Astrid Lindgren, this funny musical follows the life of the unforgettable little girl with the freckled face and red pig tales as she struggles to find her place in the world. This classic tale takes place Saturdays at 2 p.m. Actors' Playhouse at Miracle Theatre is located at 280 Miracle Mile. Tickets cost $15 for adults and children. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is offering a summer class titled The Bamboo Garden- A Private Garden Tour and Lecture. Bamboo, the largest member of the grass family, evokes images of the tropics. Gary will demonstrate proper plant placement, trimming, mulching, fertilizing and maintenance to successfully grow bamboo in South Florida. Selection of bamboo for the home garden will also be discussed. He will also host questions that pertain to anything bamboo. Directions to this private garden provided upon registration. June 26 – October 31 The University of Miami's Lowe Art Museum presents the exhibition The Jaguar's Spots: Ancient Mesoamerican Art. This comprehensive exhibition of masterpieces from ancient Mexico through Panama is a permanent collection of the Lowe Art Museum. The exhibit will be accompanied by a scholarly catalogue, lectures and educational programs that highlight and explore the complex relationship between art and the natural world. The exhibition will be open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. Admission costs $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Volunteer Mimi Winship will be leading the dance group every Monday and Thursday from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. There is no previous dance experience needed. The fee per month is $10. July 1 The Coral Gables Congregational Church presents the 2010 Summer Concert Series. The season continues with a summer concert series favorite, Ann Hampton Callaway. Callaway is one of the most widely acclaimed singers/songwriters in pop and jazz today. This Tony Award nominee for “Best Featured Actress in a Musical” and winner of the Theatre World Award for “Outstanding Broadway Debut” will charm and entertain in a remarkable evening of musical fun. The concert takes place at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 De Soto Boulevard, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for general seating or $40 for seating within the first eight rows. This fiercely funny comedy with music asks: what do a high school debate team, predators in cyberspace and a musical version of Arthur Miller's The Crucible have in common? The answer: three teenagers who are wrestling with sex, lies and YouTube videos in this off-Broadway comic hit. Performances take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Thursdays and Sunday nights, tickets cost $37.50, Friday nights and Sunday matinees cost $42.50, and tickets for performances on Saturdays costs $45.
